One in every 200 people suffers from epilepsy, making it the second most common serious neurological disorder after stroke. For centuries, people with epilepsy were stigmatized as insane, contagious or cursed — misconceptions that only heightened their suffering. The past century, however, has brought an explosion of knowledge about epilepsy and the functions of the brain, and today most people understand that epileptic seizures result from temporary electrical disruptions in the brain that interfere with brain function.
In recent years, research has spawned new anti-epileptic drugs, surgical techniques and alternative therapies that allow many people with epilepsy to lead lives that are no longer overshadowed by the fear of seizures.
The Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin is one of the few in the country providing comprehensive, individualized care for people with epilepsy. Drawing on state-of-the-science technology and treatments, a team of dedicated experts — including neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuropsychologists, nurses, social workers, and EEG technologists — specializes in helping people with unusual seizures or epilepsy that can't be controlled with currently approved medications. |

The program takes a holistic approach, addressing not only patients' seizures but also aspects of their lives that might be affected by epilepsy, such as social and workplace challenges.
Level 4 Epilepsy Center
The Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is designated a Level 4 epilepsy center — the highest rating — by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. A Level 4 epilepsy center serves as a regional or national referral facility and offers:
- A complete evaluation for epilepsy
- More complex forms of intensive neurodiagnostic monitoring
- More extensive medical, neuropsychological and psychosocial treatment
- A broad range of surgical procedures, including intracranial electrodes
The Joint Commission
The Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin is Joint Commission certified as a Center of Excellence for Epilepsy. We are proud to be one of only three hospitals in the country with this certification.
Clinical Trials
As part of an academic medical center, the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin's Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is involved in clinical trials (also called medical research and research studies) to help establish the safety and effectiveness of new drugs, medical devices or therapies as well as new ways of using current treatments.
