Breast Cancer Program

Highlights

Fully Coordinated Cancer Care

Breast cancer is a complex disease, and treating it requires several different kinds of physicians — surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists and plastic surgeons. The Breast Cancer Program at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin includes a complete team of breast cancer specialists with expertise in every aspect of breast cancer treatment. These physicians work together to create an individualized treatment plan for every patient. During weekly tumor board meetings, they pool their expertise to make sure each patient is receiving the most effective care possible. The result is true multidisciplinary treatment that is completely coordinated. Patients receive a seamless care experience and the best chance of a good outcome.

Innovations: Giving New Meaning to Personalized Care

A woman facing breast cancer today might hope for personalized care delivered with sensitivity to her physical and emotional well-being. At Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, cancer specialists elevate "personalized" to a new level. "Personalized" also refers to the leading edge of medical science, where breast cancer treatment is customized to each individual. Innovations at Froedtert & The Medical College are expanding options for treatment, precisely tailoring therapy and offering effective cures or disease control. Breast Care Center

Women in the Breast Cancer Program have access to complete services at the Breast Care Center, a comprehensive breast health center located on the third floor of the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center. Patients go to the Breast Care Center for all their physician appointments, nurse consultations, tests, follow-up care and support. The center also provides complete screening services. The Breast Care Center at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin has been accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).

DIEP Flap: The Most Advanced Breast Reconstruction

The Breast Cancer Program at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin is one of a handful of programs nationwide that offer deep inferior epigastric perforator flap (DIEP Flap) breast reconstruction surgery. Unlike standard tissue reconstructions, the DIEP Flap procedure leaves the patient’s abdominal muscles intact. The result is faster healing, less pain and preservation of core strength. To find out more, see Breast Reconstruction.

Genetic Counseling and Testing

The Cancer Genetics Screening Program at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin can provide counseling and testing for women who are concerned about their inherited risk of breast cancer. For more information, see Genetic Testing for BRCA Genes.

A Center for National Research

The physicians of the Breast Cancer Program are actively involved in research aimed at improving treatment and outcomes for women with breast cancer. The investigations they lead at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin have drawn national and international attention, and they participate actively in many large clinical trials of new treatment techniques and cancer drugs. Our commitment to research means patients have access to the most advanced therapies available.

Physicians in the Breast Cancer Program regularly publish their research in academic journals and present their findings at national and international breast cancer conferences.
