Trauma Center Receives Reverification
Milwaukee, Wis. (July 6, 2010) — Wisconsin’s oldest, most experienced Level I adult Trauma Center has been reverified by the American College of Surgeons. Level I designation is the highest rating a trauma center may receive.
This verification distinguishes Froedtert Hospital as a unique center, dedicated to the highest standard of care for patients of sudden illness and injury. “It confirms that Froedtert has the expertise to manage severely injured patients 24 hours a day, 365 days every year,” says Dr. John Weigelt, Professor and Chief of Trauma and Critical Care at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin.
“The Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Level I Trauma Center is a community resource that can be relied upon to provide optimal care to injured patients,” Dr. Weigelt says. Patients benefit from our specialty expertise in trauma, emergency medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics, anesthesiology, radiology, intensive care, otolaryngology, obstetrics, plastic and hand surgery, and more.
The Trauma Center treats about 3,300 cases a year. Trauma is the leading cause of death throughout an individual’s first 45 years of life. It causes more disability and lost productivity than heart disease and cancer combined. A recent national study, which included patients treated at Froedtert, documented that care at a Level I trauma center lowered death rates and improved long term outcomes.
In addition to patient care, research and education, the Froedtert & The Medical College Trauma Center provides a valuable service to people in Wisconsin and is working to strengthen and expand trauma care throughout the region. It is a leader in training and educating healthcare professionals, and is an active member in the state-wide trauma system.
