Radiation Oncologists Join St. Joseph's Staff
WEST BEND, WI (June 9, 2009) – Medical College of Wisconsin radiation oncologists Mark Macedon, MD, and Roger Byhardt, MD, FACR, will be providing radiation oncology services at the Alyce and Elmore Kraemer Cancer Care Center of St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend starting July 6.
Experts in general radiation therapy, Dr. Macedon and Dr. Byhardt will not only see new patients at the center but will also provide follow-up care for patients who have previously received radiation therapy at the center, which has served patients in radiation and medical oncology since it opened in 2000.
The addition of Medical College radiation oncologists represents a new dimension for locally provided cancer care in West Bend and Washington County, providing daily on-site radiation oncology coverage and linking patients to immediate access to more than a dozen disease-specific programs at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center and a network of cancer resources.

“The West Bend and Washington County area is very fortunate to have a cancer care center of outstanding quality that is closely linked to the nationally and internationally recognized cancer resources at Froedtert & The Medical College, which is the only academic medical center in eastern Wisconsin,” said J. Frank Wilson, MD, professor and chairman of radiation oncology at the Medical College and director of Froedtert & The Medical College Adult Cancer Clinical Service Line.
Dr. Macedon received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and completed his internship in radiation oncology at Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield, Wis. He completed his residency in radiation oncology at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn. A fan of classical music, Dr. Macedon also has a degree in music and plays bassoon and piano.
Dr. Byhardt received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. His training includes an internship at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Col., and a residency in radiation oncology at Penrose Cancer Hospital in Colorado Springs, Col. Among his outside interests, Dr. Byhardt is also a musician. He plays trumpet and flugelhorn and performs in the Brookfield Civic Band.

The Alyce and Elmore Kraemer Cancer Care Center, located at 1110 Oak Street in West Bend, is Washington County’s most comprehensive cancer care center, treating all types of cancer and equipped with the area’s only linear accelerator, the technology used to deliver cancer-killing radiation treatments. The center opened in March 2000, supported by community donations including a $2 million gift from the late Alyce Kraemer, and named in honor of Alyce Kraemer and her husband, Elmore.
According to Laird, additional cancer services are also planned in the coming months, as part of St. Joseph’s Hospital’s goal of growing its cancer program and providing more services close to where people live. They include the addition of a Froedtert & The Medical College genetic counselor who will provide testing and counseling services for individuals whose cancer may have a hereditary component.
