Free Breast Health Program Offered
for African-American Women
Milwaukee (Sept. 4, 2007) — Three learning sessions created by and for African-American women will be held this fall to create awareness about the importance of breast health. How to perform a breast self-exam, what to look for and what a woman should do if she finds a lump in her breast will be explained by two African-American nurses who are active locally and nationally in community breast health education and advocacy.
The free sessions will be held on Sept. 19, Oct. 17 and Nov. 14 at St. Andrew’s Community Center, 3421 W. Lisbon Ave., from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. For information and to reserve a place in one of the sessions, call 414-805-3666. Walk-ins are also welcome.
The learning sessions will be led by Sandra Millon-Underwood, PhD, RN, a nationally recognized expert in community-based cancer detection and treatment and a professor of nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; and Bonnie Anderson, LPN, a community health educator and a director of ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis, a Milwaukee non-profit organization.
“It’s so important to know your own body and to pay attention to your breast health, especially if other women in your family have had breast cancer,” said Anderson, who is a breast cancer survivor.
Millon-Underwood added, “Knowledge is power. Being informed could someday help save a woman’s life.”
The program is sponsored by Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin in collaboration with UW-Milwaukee and supported by a grant from the Ralph A. Evinrude Foundation.
