Tips for Keeping You Safe and Well

The Sky is Rumbling

Even though we want the nice warm weather, we will have to take the good with the bad. The dark clouds and rain are going to be around. There really is no way around bad weather.

When the bad weather does start rolling in, safety is the key. Thunder and lightening often accompanies the rain. Keep your home disaster supplies at hand. Check for stuff in the yard like toys, bikes and yard tools that can be blown around by the strong winds. Have a safe place to stay during the storm. If you are caught outdoors, avoid lightening rods and kites!

If a tornado may strike, stay tuned for weather updates. Have a home safety kit prepared (see www.RedCross.org for more information). Take shelter. When a tornado WATCH is issued, listen to local radio and TV stations for further updates. Be alert to changing weather conditions. Blowing items or the sound of an approaching tornado may alert you. The tornado may sound like a freight train. When a tornado WARNING is issued, go inside. Go to your safe place you picked. If you are outside, hurry to the basement of a nearby sturdy building or lie flat in a ditch or low lying area. If you are in a car or mobile home, get out and head for safety (as above). Dorothy had a wicked time with a tornado; I do not want you to as well.

Now go outside, enjoy the weather, and grill out! I like my burgers medium rare with ketchup, mushrooms and onions …
