Tips for Keeping You Safe and Well

Raining Cats and Dogs

Springtime can be so refreshing. The snow is melting or already gone. The grass, trees and flowers are finally waking up. But spring can also bring on rain and flooding. So what can you do to better prepare yourself?

Before the weatherman starts talking about the potential of flooding, be prepared by following these tips.

  • Are you in a flooding risk area? If you are, stockpile emergency building materials. Stock up on plywood, nails, hammers, shovels and sandbags. You can go to the local hardware stores and buy check valves to be placed in the sewer traps to prevent floodwater from backing up in the drains. Have plugs for the tubs, sinks and showers. Show other family members how to turn off the water, gas and electricity. Be prepared to evacuate. Be sure the gas tank in your car is full.

  • Is your family emergency plan is up to date? If you do not have one, it is time to get one. The American Red Cross has great information.

  • Do you have all your emergency contacts in your cell phone? Even if you do not have cell coverage, you can still retrieve your numbers. Have an out-of-state friend or family member to be the family contact. After a disaster, it is sometimes easier to call out of state than locally. Make sure your family has the contact’s name, phone number and address.

  • Where is your family meeting place in the event you are separated?

  • Make sure your evacuation kit is good to go. You do not want to be running around trying to get things together at the last minute. Do not forget everyone’s medications. Do not forget to take your pets with you as well.

Like the saying goes, better to have and not use rather than not having and end up in a pickle.
