Tips for Keeping You Safe and Well

Prepared for Snowy Success

Like I have written before, I love winter. I must admit, however, that even towards the end of this season, I do get a little tired of the dreariness. Even though the majority of us are thinking spring, Wisconsin weather may still be snowing on our spring flowers. So until the snow is gone, we still need to be prepared.

Dress for the weather. I know, winter boots are not the fashion statement you want to make (just ask my niece who never wants to wear them), but they are much better for walking in the snow than your dress shoes or sneakers. If you do not want to wear your boots, bring them with you. Keep them in the car in case of an emergency.

The layered look is still in for winter. Wearing loose fitting, lightweight layers will actually keep you warmer.

You can also put together a winter kit for your car. Your kit should include a blanket or sleeping bag, hat, mittens, scarf, extra dry clothes, flashlight with extra batteries, non-perishable high calorie snack food, windshield scraper, first aid kit and jumper cables. Also included, which would be used if you would become stuck, would be kitty litter or sand for traction, tow rope, and a shovel. For the long trips, you can pack a can and waterproof matches for melting the snow into drinking water. Remember to stay away from the yellow snow.

You can still look forward to the spring flowers while being prepared for the snow. I just love the smell of lilacs …
