We have decent, warm weather for such a short period of time, and we try to pack it so full. The heat does feel good, but can also pose a serious heath threat.
Here are just a few things to keep in mind:
- Remember to dress for the heat. Wear light, flowing fabric.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Eat small meals and eat more often.
- S L O W D O W N ! !
- If it is really hot out there, stay indoors when possible.
- When working outside, take regular breaks and hydrate.
- Do not do outside work during peak heat times. Get out there in the early a.m. or dusk. Okay, I know, I know, then we need to fend off all the mosquitoes, but a little bug spray and we should be good to go.
- Also, if it's hot to you, it's hot for your pets as well. Make sure they have plenty of clean, cool water and shade.
Here are some clarifications of the heat-related terms you may hear in the summer.
- A Heat Wave is more than 48 hours of 90°F or higher, and high humidity of 80% or higher is expected.
- Heat Index is how hot it really feels with the heat and humidity.
- Heat Exhaustion is the body fluid loss do to sweating. Causes are too many clothes on, heavy exercise or work. Some of the signs and symptoms are: cool, moist, pale, flushed or red skin; heavy sweating; headache; nausea or vomiting; dizziness; exhaustion; body temperature will be near normal.
- Heat Stroke (sunstroke) is when the body’s temperature regulation is no longer working. This can cause brain damage and death. Some of the signs and symptoms are: hot, red, dry skin; changes in consciousness; rapid, weak pulse; rapid, shallow breathing; a temperature over 105°F.
Time to grab lemonade and enjoy the sun, wearing sun block of course!
