GERD Can Cause Serious Medical Conditions

“Americans spend billions of dollars annually on medication to control the symptoms of acid reflux. Almost everyone will experience acid reflux in their lifetime, and it can often be controlled by over-the-counter or prescription medication, diet and lifestyle changes such as not eating before bedtime,” said Matthew Goldblatt MD, FACS, a Medical College of Wisconsin surgeon. “Many people also find relief by taking a daily prescription to control the acid, but sometimes the symptoms persist because the pills don’t stop the actual reflux.”

Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when the valve or muscle between the esophagus and stomach doesn’t close tightly, allowing stomach contents to go back into the esophagus. GERD can cause heartburn and other serious conditions such as night cough, chronic sinus infections, hoarseness, esophageal ulcers, dental problems or even damage to the esophagus that could increase the risk of cancer, according to Dr. Goldblatt.

When lifestyle modifications and treatments aren’t enough, it may be time to consider surgery. Nissen fundoplication, which closes the valve and strengthens the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) by wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the esophagus, is one option and can often be performed as a minimally invasive procedure. Another option is a procedure during which the surgical device is introduced into the body through the mouth, which leaves no visible scars.

If you have reflux, discuss the options with your primary care physician or gastroenterologist. For an appointment with a Medical College of Wisconsin physician/specialist, call 800-272-3666.
