Living the DreamGrowing up in Minden, Nev., Jaime Shuff, MD, often heard stories about her maternal grandfather. “He died from cancer when my mother was only 13,” Dr. Shuff said. “Hearing about him and other family members and friends with cancer got me interested in becoming a doctor.”
Today, Dr. Shuff is fulfilling her lifelong dream as a resident in Radiation Oncology at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin. She’s in the fourth year of a five-year residency program.
While in medical school at the University of Nevada, Dr. Shuff found radiation oncology was the best match for her interests. Following an internship at the VA Medical Center and Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev., she came to Froedtert & the Medical College to begin her residency.
“The staff are well-known throughout the country,” she said. “They provide excellent teaching and guidance to residents. And we have opportunities to work with the most advanced image-guided technology available today, such as CT on rails and Tomotherapy®.”
Dr. Shuff said the best part of her work is interacting with patients. “Some people think radiation oncologists only sit at a machine and deliver radiation. But we interact with our patients throughout the day and work with a team of specialists to tailor treatment for each patient.” she said.
“Cancer is different in each person; in this program, residents see a wide variety of patients of all ages with varying types of cancer.
“Our patients are highly motivated and willing to make changes in their lives to beat cancer. I enjoy the challenges of treating each of them.”
After she completes her residency, Dr. Shuff plans to establish a practice in Nevada near family and friends.
