Technology’s Human Side Inspired
Move to Medicine
Linda Grossheim, MD started out in the technical side of radiation oncology, but the field’s human side exerted a strong pull.
During the early 1990s, Dr. Grossheim worked as a biomedical engineer at a large healthcare technology company. Although she enjoyed her job, she says she yearned to use her scientific background to help people directly. In 1995, Dr. Grossheim shifted gears and enrolled in medical school.
Dr. Grossheim is now chief resident in Radiation Oncology at Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin. She says she chose Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin for her training because of its world-class reputation. “Doing a residency here is definitely a privilege,” she says.
Dr. Grossheim treats patients with a wide variety of cancers. One of her goals is to help patients understand their therapy and feel comfortable with it. She strives to support them in other ways as well: “I try to make patients understand that we will be with them through the whole process.”
What strikes Dr. Grossheim about cancer patients is that every one is unique. For the most part, she believes, people battling cancer are also very brave and very caring. “I think the patients are special,” she adds.
