Growing Together: Progressive Health

In the past months, you may have heard about proposed plans for a linkage between Froedtert & Community Health and Columbia St. Mary’s. After a great deal of thoughtful discussion, we were pleased to announce in January that the boards of directors for Columbia St. Mary’s and Froedtert & Community Health approved a joint operating agreement. The agreement forms Progressive Health, an organization that will financially integrate, govern and lead Columbia St. Mary’s and Froedtert & Community Health.
The name Progressive Health was chosen to reflect the system’s forwardthinking ideas about how health care should be delivered. The system includes four strong community hospitals: Community Memorial Hospital and Columbia St. Mary’s three hospitals on Milwaukee’s northeast side. And it links to the Medical College of Wisconsin, ensuring we remain on the leading edge of the research and technology that drive progress in health care.
Progressive Health’s mission statement is: “We improve the health of our patients and communities by blending the unique strengths of our academic and community partnership.”
This academic-community partnership will be patient focused, collaborative and results oriented. It will:
- Improve patient convenience. Our hospitals and clinics are in complementary locations throughout metro-Milwaukee. The system will also add new clinical sites and will enhance relationships with community physicians.
- Expand and enhance care coordination. We will electronically link physician services, clinic sites and hospitals to provide continuity across the continuum of care.
- Continue Froedtert’s strong partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin Physicians Group and create new links between the academic medical center and community hospitals.
- Offer comprehensive care and the resources to address all health conditions, from the common to the complex.
- Exercise good stewardship of resources, strengthening solid clinical programs, e.g., cancer, neurosciences, cardiovascular, orthopaedics and women’s health.
Leo Brideau, president and CEO of Columbia St. Mary’s, and I will serve as co-presidents and sit on the 16-member, community-based board of directors of Progressive Health. This leadership model reflects the partnership philosophy that led our two strong health systems to form Progressive Health. It draws on Leo’s and my experience, shared leadership values and a 20-year working relationship.
