Clinical Trial for Patients with Metastatic Liver Cancer

Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin are among five sites in the country participating in a clinical trial to treat metastatic liver cancer using TheraSphere®.

Metastatic liver cancer is cancer that has spread to the liver from other parts of the body. While liver cancer is rarely curable, treatment can extend life and improve quality of life. TheraSphere® is an aggressive, non-surgical therapy for inoperable liver tumors. The system delivers a high dose of radiation directly to a tumor with minimal effect to healthy surrounding tissue.

William Rilling, MD, FSIR, principal investigator for the trial, said, β€œThe study will involve 150 patients – 30 at each site – with metastatic liver cancer.” Dr. Rilling is a Medical College of Wisconsin interventional radiologist and director of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. The trial began in July 2007 and will run for at least 18 months.
