Study Shows Teaching Hospitals
Have Big Impact on Economy
According to a recent study by the Association of American Medical Colleges, academic medical centers play an important role in the economic well-being of their communities. The study examined 126 medical colleges and more than 300 teaching hospitals. It found that in 2002 these institutions had a combined economic impact of $326 billion and employed one out of every 54 wage earners.
The study also noted that academic medical centers pump fresh dollars into local economies by attracting federal resources and private funds for research and drawing patients from around the region, the nation and the world.
