Sewall Named to “Top Dentists” List
Steven R. Sewall, DDS, a Medical College of Wisconsin oral surgeon and chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, has been named one of the “Top Dentists” in the nation by the Consumers’ Research Council of America. This honor recognizes Sewall’s experience, training and board certification, as well as his extensive involvement with professional associations.
Sewall specializes in reconstructing the jaw and facial bones of patients with tumor damage, traumatic injuries and degenerative arthritis. He says the Froedtert & Medical College oral surgery practice “bridges the gap” between dentistry and medicine. “We have a dental background, plus four to six years of additional residency training.”
Sewall is one of a handful of surgeons in the Midwest who perform total reconstruction of the jaw joint. In addition, he and colleague Doran Ryan, DDS, Medical College of Wisconsin oral and maxillofacial surgeon, have performed several reconstructions for cancer patients using custom made upper and lower jaws. “This is a big step forward. In the past, all we had were stock pieces that didn’t fit that well.” Drs. Sewall and Ryan also use new “rigid fixation” techniques to treat facial bone fractures. “The result is faster healing — and getting the patient out into the world much more quickly.”
