Program Limits Financial Risk for In Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization (IVF) — joining an egg and a sperm cell in a test tube to create an embryo — has helped thousands of infertile couples have babies. However, IVF costs* — $13,000 per fresh cycle or $3,500 for a frozen embryo attempt — can be challenging.

To help couples improve their chances while limiting financial risk, the Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Reproductive Medicine Center now offers the Attain™ IVF Program.

“A typical IVF cycle takes about two months,” said Medical College of Wisconsin obstetrician/gynecologist Estil Strawn, MD, director of the Reproductive Medicine Center. “Women under age 35 have a 50 percent success rate after one IVF cycle. By the third or fourth attempt, the success rate is 80 percent.”

The Attain™ IVF Program seeks to improve patient success by guaranteeing a refund if treatment does not result in a baby. The $26,000 fee will allow up to three fresh IVF cycles and three cycles using a couple’s frozen embryos, for a total of six attempts. If no baby results after six cycles, the refund is 70 percent (if using a woman’s own eggs) or 100 percent (if using donor eggs).

“Attain benefits couples who need more than two IVF attempts,” Dr. Strawn said. “It can provide peace of mind by allowing more IVF treatments, while limiting financial risk.”
