PGY1 Residency Project Evaluating Antiretroviral Prescribing Errors in Hospitalized Patients
I will be reviewing retrospective data to evaluate the antiretroviral prescribing errors in patients that are hospitalized and discharged. According to the US DHHS adherence to antiretrovirals has a strong correlation to HIV suppression. A study preformed in 2003-2004 at FH evaluated the prescribing errors of ARV and its effects on HIV suppression. This study was done prior to pharmacist driven medication histories and reconciliation; we hope to see how effective a pharmacist’s intervention can have on a disease state that requires 95 percent compliance to remain effective. From data collected over the past year I plan on assessing the need for implementing further education to pharmacists and physicians and potentially developing a systematic approach to managing HIV patients while hospitalized and upon discharge.

PGY2 Residency Project Evaluating Adherence to Estrogen Receptor Therapy in Stage 1-3 Breast Cancer patients through Telephone Interviews and Mail Order Pharmacy Services I will be enrolling approximately 120 patients in a prospective randomized single-center study to either standard of care or pharmacy intervention arm. Patients enrolled in the intervention arm will receive monthly phone calls from a pharmacist to assess adherence along with enrollment in the Froedtert Hospital Outpatient Mail Order pharmacy. Patients in the standard of care arm will continue filling their prescriptions at their preferred pharmacies. I will obtain refill histories from all patients both self-reported and from pharmacy records. Patients will also fill out quality of life surveys. We hope to improve patients’ adherence to medication through pharmacy interventions.
Why did you choose to pursue a residency? My main reason for deciding to do a residency was to become a confident, well-rounded, knowledgeable pharmacist. I felt after 6 years of pharmacy school I needed a more in depth focus on hospital pharmacy and experience areas of pharmacy that I was unable to see during pharmacy school. I also enjoy learning and knew that with a residency I would only continue to learn how to improve my skills as a practitioner.
What attracted you to Froedtert’s pharmacy residency program? I wanted a residency that would offer rounding with physicians, medical residents, and pharmacy students. I liked the multitude of rotations to choose from and flexibility in scheduling based on interest. I wanted also to have a residency at an academic hospital to improve on my preceptor skills with pharmacy students. You also can not beat the growth the Clinical Cancer Center has had over the past years and I really wanted to be a part of a growing residency.
