Bridge inspections conducted last night revealed additional cracking in the structure, prompting the immediate closure. Northbound traffic will be detoured to eastbound I-94 to 84th Street, turn around at 84th Street to head northbound on U.S. 45. Other closures are as follows:
  • U.S. 45 northbound on-ramp at Greenfield Ave.
  • U.S. 45 northbound on-ramp at Lincoln Ave.
  • U.S. 45 northbound on-ramp at National
  • 84th Street will be closed in the area to facilitate movements for the detoured freeway traffic
  • I-94 westbound 84th Street off-ramp

Weight restrictions have been in place since August. Even with increased law enforcement on the Zoo Interchange bridges, overweight trucks continue to ignore the posted limits. The safety of the motoring public is WisDOT’s top priority and has made the decision to close the bridge.

Additional signing and detour routes will be posted. WisDOT encourages motorists to plan ahead while traveling in the area, use alternate routes and expect delays.

WisDOT is working with the contractor to accelerate the schedule and limit traffic impacts.

Work to rebuild three bridges in the Zoo Interchange began in January at the following locations:
  • Northbound I-894/U.S. 45 through the interchange to north US 45
  • Southbound U.S. 45 to the eastbound I-94 connector ramp
  • Northbound I-894/U.S. 45 to the westbound I-94 ramp

The current schedule calls for all major construction work on the three structures is expected to be completed by Memorial Day weekend in 2010, with some remaining work continuing through mid-June 2010.
