Quality Care

Bariatric Reports

The Bariatric Surgery Program at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin maintains an extensive database of gastric bypass surgery patients. We also track quality measures and compare those to other leading institutions. On this page, we report on some of these measures.

Infection Rates

Froedtert has consistently recorded lower infection rates than that of a group of hospitals in the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) reports. In fact, in 2004 and 2005, Froedtert had zero infections in all risk groups. The risk groups are optained using the NHSN definitions and stratifications and takes into account such items as duration of the operation and underlying disease condition. The lower the number, the lower the risk of infections.

Readmissions and Complications

Froedtert has also recorded lower rates of readmissions and complications from laparoscopic gastric bypass procedures as compared with the University HealthSystem Consortium top ten healthcare organizations.

Deaths Expected and Observed

In 2008, there were zero deaths as a result of gastric bypass procedure, lower than the UHC top ten and lower also than the expected rate.

The above information addresses the Institute of Medicine’s aim for health care that is effective.
