Additional Medical Achievements
Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin have constantly been at the forefront of new technology:
Magnetoencephalography (MEG)
Froedtert & The Medical College recently became the first healthcare organization in the state to use magnetoencephalography (MEG) imaging in patient care. This non-invasive technology can help patients with brain cancer and severe epilepsy cases.
TomoTherapy Hi-Art® System
The TomoTherapy Hi-Art® System makes radiation therapy available to patients who would not otherwise be candidates, including those who have undergone radiation therapy once but whose cancers have returned and patients with skull base tumors that are too large to be treated with the Gamma Knife.
TomoTherapy® combines advanced diagnostic imaging with unprecedented treatment efficiency, precision and safety. That means faster, more effective treatment with fewer side effects than with conventional radiation therapy. This precision allows the delivery of high doses of radiation extremely efficiently, sparing healthy tissue and shortening treatment from 30 minutes to five minutes.
64-Slice CT Scanner
Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin together are home to the world’s first LightSpeed VCT – a new state-of-the-art 64-slice CT Scanner – which has the potential to transform the way doctors are able to diagnose and treat heart disease and other life-threatening illnesses. The LightSpeed VCT is able to noninvasively capture any organ in one second, scan the whole body in less than 10 seconds and capture images of the heart in fewer than five heartbeats, something no other CT system can offer. These images are combined to form a three-dimensional view of the patient’s anatomy for the physician to analyze.
Gliasite® Radiation Therapy System
Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin are the first in Wisconsin to offer brain tumor patients this new type of radiation therapy device that delivers radiation directly to the site of the cancer. Gliasite® advantages include shorter treatment time and a lower incidence of side effects.
Auditory Brainstem Implant
Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin are the first in Wisconsin to use this technology for providing some hearing capacity after surgery for patients who suffer from tumors on their auditory nerves.
GE Medical Systems 4-D Technology

Advanced Operating Suites
Some of the most advanced operating suites in the nation exist at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin, with state-of-the-art, voice-activated capabilities that allow physicians to control almost all aspects of the environment. Live video can be sent to other operating rooms or hospitals for instant consultation or teaching.
Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Imaging (MRSI)
Neurosurgeons at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin were among the first in the nation to use this technology to predict the spread of brain cancer. MRSI allows neurosurgeons to look at a large area of the brain and see changes in brain chemistry that could point to a growing tumor.
Kyphoplasty
One of only a few in the country to perform this minimally invasive procedure to help patients suffering from spinal fractures due to osteoporosis. Orthopedic surgeons at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin are able to expand bone back to its original shape and position and recovery time is shortened.
Minimally Invasive Hysterectomy
Reproductive specialists at Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin were among the first in the state to offer this new surgery that greatly reduces the traditionally long recovery period.
